Matcha or coffee: which to choose to start the day?
Matcha or coffee: there is no universal winner. Both naturally contain caffeine, but their flavour, dose and preparation are very different. Coffee suits people who enjoy roasted flavours and quick preparation; matcha offers a vegetal, umami profile with a dose that is easy to adjust.
In short: choose mainly according to taste, caffeine sensitivity and routine. Matcha is not caffeine-free, and coffee is not inherently bad.
Matcha and coffee are different drinks
| Criterion | Matcha | Coffee |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Japanese powdered green tea | Roasted ground coffee beans |
| Taste | Vegetal, umami, slight bitterness | Roasted, fruity, chocolatey or bitter depending on the coffee |
| Caffeine | Varies with tea and grams used | Varies with beans, extraction and serving size |
| Preparation | Sifting, hot water, whisking | Espresso, filter, French press, etc. |
Which has more caffeine?
There is no single fixed number. Dose depends on the product, amount of raw material and drink size. A large filter coffee often contains more caffeine than a standard matcha serving, but ranges can overlap.
Does matcha provide “more stable energy”?
This phrase is common in marketing, but it should not be treated as a guarantee. Caffeine is still caffeine. Matcha naturally contains L-theanine and other tea compounds, but how you feel also depends on dose, drinking speed and individual sensitivity.
Which one for a working morning?
Coffee is convenient if you like a strong roasted drink and fast preparation. Matcha may suit you if you enjoy a short ritual of weighing, sifting, controlling water temperature and whisking.
If you are sensitive to caffeine
Start with a smaller serving and observe your response. With matcha, 1–1.5 g can be used for a lighter preparation. Avoid stacking many caffeine sources if you are sensitive.
Can matcha replace coffee?
Yes, if you enjoy the taste and the caffeine dose suits you. It is also perfectly fine to drink both at different times.
Choosing matcha for water
Look for freshness, fine texture, smoothness, umami and controlled bitterness. Our Yame Matcha is selected for this balance while remaining aromatic enough for lattes. A simple cup: 1.5–2 g matcha with 60–80 ml water at 70–80 °C.
