How Much Matcha per Cup? Dose Guide by Drink
For one cup of matcha, a useful starting point is 1.5–2 g with water and about 2–2.5 g for a latte. The ideal amount depends on liquid volume, the intensity of the matcha and the result you want.
More powder does not automatically make a better drink. The right dose balances intensity, texture, umami and bitterness.
Easy doses to remember
- Light matcha: 1–1.5 g
- Matcha with water: 1.5–2 g
- Matcha latte: 2–2.5 g
- Large latte: 2.5–3 g depending on matcha and volume
How many grams per cup?
| Drink | Starting dose | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Light matcha | 1–1.5 g | Soft and approachable |
| With water | 1.5–2 g | Balanced and aromatic |
| Latte | 2–2.5 g | Stay present in milk |
| Large latte | 2.5–3 g | More intensity |
Dose for matcha with water
Start with 1.5–2 g for 60–80 ml water. If you are new to matcha and find it too intense, try 1–1.5 g first.
The powder-to-liquid ratio matters: 2 g in 60 ml is much more concentrated than 2 g in 120 ml.
Dose for a matcha latte
Milk reduces tea intensity. For a standard latte, try 2–2.5 g matcha, 30–40 ml water and 150–180 ml milk. Start at 2 g and increase only if the matcha disappears behind the milk.
Iced matcha latte
2–2.5 g is still a good starting point. Because melting ice dilutes the drink, first consider slightly reducing the milk before adding much more powder.
Adjust to cup size
| Milk volume | Dose to test |
|---|---|
| 100–150 ml | 1.5–2 g |
| 150–200 ml | 2–2.5 g |
| 200–250 ml | 2.5–3 g depending on intensity |
Can you measure with a spoon?
Yes, but a scale is more precise. A level, heaped or packed teaspoon can hold very different amounts, which matters when the recipe uses only a few grams.
How to increase flavour without much more powder
- Reduce milk or water slightly.
- Sift and disperse the matcha properly.
- Limit strong syrups and flavourings.
- Choose matcha with enough aromatic intensity for the application.
Maison Yume's Yame Matcha has good aromatic intensity while staying smooth and low in bitterness, which helps keep the dose controlled with water or milk.
How many cups from 30 g?
| Dose | Theoretical drinks from 30 g |
|---|---|
| 1 g | 30 |
| 1.5 g | 20 |
| 2 g | 15 |
| 2.5 g | 12 |
| 3 g | 10 |
